Today is mostly sunny and cool.

I fed the birds.  I've seen some sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

I have been thinking lately about how the abstract idea of the "information battlefield" actually plays out in practice. You know, the way raw facts, stories, visuals and algorithms get pulled into campaigns that aren't just about truth vs falsehood, but about influence, disruption, trust, identity. One case in point is the war in Ukraine and how it's become as much about narratives as it is about tanks.

On the surface, you see shelling, troop movements, geopolitics. But underneath all that there is a parallel front where messages are being shaped, amplified, twisted. For instance, according to recent research, false or misleading content tied to the Ukraine conflict has surged across social platforms, often using visuals taken out of context, recycled images/videos, sensational claims — all woven into a larger campaign of influence:

I'm feeling really tense and anxious today. I hate this feeling. I went for what turned out to be a very pleasant walk this morning - it was clear and sunny and warmer outside than I expected - but even that didn't help me completely calm down. I'm *still* finding unexpected pockets of stuff (mainly papers) that I have to sort through; every time I think I've reached the end I find more. I think I might be at the end now though. What I'm feeling most anxious about today is how I'm going to fit everything in the car that I'm not sending with the movers. One medium suitcase, one carry-on size suitcase, one medium duffle bag, one medium backpack, two smaller backpacks, a sewing machine and a sewing box, a box of liquids from the kitchen because the movers don't allow liquids on their truck, a large bag of shoes, some pillows, and some more bits and pieces. Plus whatever luggage my daughter will have. I think it will all fit but I'm worrying about it. I need to keep reminding myself of the time about 50 years ago when I packed four adults and their luggage into my mini for an eight hour drive. The two in the back must have been extremely uncomfortable, but nobody complained.

My friend P and I were planning another walk this week, but she stumbled on a walnut while out running on the weekend (the black walnut trees have been dropping their walnuts very prolifically lately) and pulled a muscle in the side of her leg, so she is restricting her walking for a while. Instead of walking, we're going to have a knitting/crocheting afternoon at her house on Thursday. Luckily I haven't packed my knitting bag yet.

Towards the end of the work day, my throat started getting scratchy. Today, it is turning into a proper cold/flu/whatever THANKS A BUNCH coworkers who came in when they should have been staying home!

Went to the polling station yesterday straight after work to vote in the municipal election. I didn't have good shoes and did not take my knitting, not even considering that it might be a bit of a wait. All told, it took an hour. My feet were so sore! And I was not feeling all that energetic so I had a light dinner of potato chips and mint tea and laid in bed.

So with my body now actively fighting, I know it'll get worse before it gets better (if it follows the same timeline as my coworkers' illnesses, I'll be most miserable starting tomorrow afternoon/evening) I am clearing whatever meagre plans I had for this week. My time will be spent in bed and knitting. That's it. Revisit next week. Next thursday my dance teacher is hosting a class and I am absolutely going to be attending that, so I better be better by then!

When you craft with variegated yarn, it can cause color pooling. Some people dislike this, but planned pooling may be used to create fancy designs without switching yarn.  A friend tipped me to some websites for it.  If you'd like to play with the concept there are many online colourpooling generators/planning tools: https://magicneedles.in/blogs/guide-more/what-is-planned-pooling and https://mathgrrl.com/crochet-color-pooling/ are both great, and https://plannedpooling.com/ is the original.

Tonight I made the blueberry muffins again.  This time I added a teaspoon of freeze-dried lemon powder.  The lemon flavor is there, if subtle.  I may try this again with honey instead of maple syrup.

Straight out of the bag the lemon powder is intense, sour, and surprisingly floral.  It lacks the bitter notes I was expecting, as it comes from complete lemons peel and all, so if you want that you'll need to use fresh zest.  Advantages of the powder are that it's not overwhelming, it's dry rather than wet, it's not so acidic that it's liable to curdle things as fresh lemon juice can do, it can't spill, it should have good shelf life, and unlike lemon extract it contains no alcohol.  I'd like to explore more uses for this.  One suggestion was making lemonade or stirring it into tea, and yeah, it does smell like lemonade powder.  If you like sour flavors, you could certainly use this as a dusting ingredient for candies or cookies.

The National Guards are back. It was a nice couple of weeks of not worrying about getting shot in a Metro station.

I was trying to remember the authors Maeve66 suggested to me over the years, so I went to her Goodreads account. All of the titles are gone; her account is empty.

The last substantial rain we had was in August. The leaves are turning because it's dry, not because it's cold.

I did one thing in the yard over the weekend. The rosemary shrub is taking over the raised bed, so I dug a new hole for it. Ever since the foundation repair project, our yard has been solid clay, two feet deep. I guess it did relieve some of my frustrations to use a pickax. Maybe this coming weekend I can move a pair of volunteer pin oaks that are coming up too close to a magnolia tree.

I might try to get my COVID shot on Friday (already did the flu shot). That's about as much hope as I can muster.
